Welcome to ScArtissue, the web site of Syntax Arts Society.
Syntax is a non-profit cultural group with federal charitable status operating in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. "Syntax" is a loose acronym for (C)algary (INT)ernational (A)rtists' (C)ontact (C)entre. As artists we are committed to process rather than product, and to networking internationally with other groups and individuals who are similarly involved as cultural workers.
Syntax was established in 1980 to develop a cultural practice which could reach beyond traditional fine arts boundaries, both in the context of a very localized geography (the community of Hillhurst/Sunnyside in Calgary) and in the broader landscape of national and multinational media.
We exist in order to engage artists in broader social issues, and to work directly in these areas of social exchange rather than to allow our work to be mediated through existing fine arts structures. We believe this neither diminishes our creative work nor isolates us from the cultural history we share with other institutionally trained artists.
While engaging ourselves directly in local issues as the primary physical and social environment for our work, we are equally aware of the universality of most of these issues, and the need for mutually beneficial exchanges with similarly minded groups and individuals.
This site has been developed to encourage international collaborations. In the future we will be developing web-based projects which address issues of interest to similar groups globally.
We welcome input from like-minded groups and individuals. We invite expressions of interest via e-mail which will enable us to build a contact base for future collaborations on the internet.
In the meantime we invite you to discover More about Syntax, browse through documentation of Past Projects and Publications catalogue.
